Meet Our Consultants - Aaron Stebbings

Tell us about your background before you came to Oscar?

Before I began working at Oscar I’d never done recruitment and I’d never really heard anything about it. I went off on a completely different angle having done economics at university. Someone mentioned that recruitment might suit me as you get the career but can also earn good money from it as well.

What was different about Oscar compared to any other agency you interviewed at?

I think anyone starting out in recruitment, whether they go through a rec to rec or to the company directly, will end up with a lot of interviews.

I interviewed at a couple of places and to be honest I didn’t really know what I was getting into, and I personally used the interviews to glean information about the companies. When you interview at Oscar, compared to going elsewhere, there’s a great atmosphere here. It was that, plus the directors I met who believed in what they were doing and where they wanted to get to with the company, that I thought Oscar was the right place for me.

How has the training scheme here helped your career?

The training here is probably one of the best in the industry. Personally for me, I came in having never done recruitment or even a job where I had to be on the phone, and so every aspect of the training for me was crucial. The way they train here really helps. I don’t think I’d be where I am now if it weren’t for that.

What was the most valuable part of the training for you?

I don’t think you can pin it on one thing. You go through all these different training programmes and in each one you pick up on different things. The training is ongoing, so you can always learn and seek guidance whenever you need to.

What do you enjoy most about working at Oscar?

One of the best things definitely has to be that you can earn good money from it if you put in the effort, and to be honest this is one of the reasons most people get into recruitment. Secondly I think it’s generally a very good atmosphere here. None of us internally within the office are competing against one another, so I’m not competing with someone else’s market. We’re all pushing together in the same direction which is good, and makes you want to come into work.

How has you career progressed since starting at Oscar?

As I said, when I started I didn’t really know what I was doing. I came in as what we would call a trainee working under a particular manager. You then, as a trainee, learn the ropes, and then become a consultant. From being a consultant you start to consistently earn good money. Once you reach that point you then become a senior consultant and you can have people who you recruit yourself working under you in your team. You train them, they become consultants.

I’m at that point now where I’ve had two trainees, both of them are now consultants and the next step would be to become a lead consultant.

In terms of the time span, three years, going from not having a clue and being a trainee, to now earning good money and managing a small team – you can’t ask for better than that!
