Meet Our Graduates - Melissa Houghton

Position: Managing Consultant, Manchester Office

What do you think makes a successful recruiter?

Having worked in this role for 4 years I feel to be successful it is essential to keep a positive mind set and have real motivation to achieve your financial goals.

You can’t be afraid of hard work and the long hours that the job will involve. A competitive streak always helps too!

What’s your favourite part about working for Oscar/ what do you enjoy most about your role?

For me it’s all about the people. From the directors, the recruitment population and the support team we all work with one goal in mind and success is rewarded organically throughout the business. I enjoy building strong relationships with clients and candidates and seeing hard work pay off.

Also for me in a managerial position it is rewarding to see members of my team grow as consultants and succeed in the role.

How has Oscar / the School of Excellence helped develop your career?

Before starting with Oscar I had no experience in recruitment so the School of Excellence was crucial for me initially starting out as a trainee. From day 1 the training process was in valuable; provided by our experienced management team who have become experts in the industry.

This is on-going and delivered through a variety of comprehensive methods including interactive group and 1-2-1 sessions providing helpful feedback and proactive support.

The training scheme takes you throughout the full 360 process and with a training manager on site you always have the opportunity to suggest any areas you feel you may need additional training.

This has been crucial for me in becoming a specialist consultant. They have also supported me moving into my first management role providing on-going advice and guidance.

What’s your biggest achievement so far?

I feel my biggest achievement is building a team of 8 within the past 18 months and having brought my trainees through the training process; progressing into successful consultants.

In September of this year I also achieved Consultant of the Year 2016 at the Drum Recruitment Awards which was judged on consultants across the UK aside from central London.

What was the interview process like?

The interview process really gave a great feel for the business; everyone that I met with gave me an honest view of what it was like to work at Oscar and what I needed to do to succeed.

The role plays which were part of the interview process pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped give me a realistic idea of the objections you can come up against in the role.

At the time I was interviewing at several other recruitment companies but what put Oscar above everyone else for me was the working environment which was buzzing with activity.

What advice would you give to anyone looking to start a career with Oscar?

If you are looking for a meritocratic business that promote from within and offer you on-going training and support then Oscar is the place to be. In return you will need to work hard & smart, have the ability to adapt to our training & processes and also have a great personality in order to build long lasting relationships!
