Key Points from April

  • The number of employers citing cost as a key factor when choosing an agency dropped to 68% from 80% in March. 97% said that quality of service was the most important.
  • More employers planned to increase agency worker headcount than permanent headcount.

Skills Shortages

46% of employers expect a shortage of candidates within permanent recruitment. The top three areas of concern in permanent recruitment are Health and Social Care, Engineering, and Construction.

Three in ten (29%) of employers expect a shortage in temporary agency workers. Key areas of concern in May were Heath and Social Care, Engineering, and Construction.


Importance of Agency Workers to Employers

57% of employers said that agency workers are important to 'Responding to Growth'. The majority of employers stated that agency workers are especially important during 'Peaks in Demand' (59%). 'Managing Uncertainty' remained the lowest importance (32%).


Employer Satisfaction with Agencies

76% of UK employers said that they were either fairly or very satisfied with recruitment agencies that they had used. In London, this figure rose to 86%.


Criteria Used by Employers to Select Agencies

Quality of service and agency expertise came out of the most important criteria when selecting an agency, highlighted by 97% and 90% of organisations respectively.


Satisfaction With Candidates

76% of UK employers expressed satisfaction with the quality of candidates, slightly higher than in March. 18% of all UK employers said that they were very satisfied with the quality of candidates.


Agency Worker Pay Rates

Over three-quarters (76%) of UK employers say that temporary agency workers earn the same or more than their permanent counterparts.


Recruitment Channels Used

A significant proportion of employers said that they preferred to recruit new members of staff by asking former employees and asking around.
