Caroline Wilson has joined Oscar Technology as the company’s new Contract Director (UK and Europe), based in our Manchester office. Find out more about Caroline, her experience in the sector and her expertise within contract recruitment.
Welcome! Tell us a little about yourself.
Thank you! My name is Caroline Wilson, and I graduated from Aston University in 2007 and joined SThree in the same year. Over my 12-year career at SThree, I climbed the ranks from contract biller, team leader, senior business manager then Associate Director, all within the Computer Futures brand. I even won multiple awards, including Manager of the Year at the UK and Europe AGM!
I have always specialised in contract recruitment, and I managed teams across multiple locations including Manchester, Dublin, Edinburgh and Birmingham. However, during 2019 I was eager to take a new challenge and decided that after twelve years in one business it would be great to reset my career and plunge into the unknown. I took on the role of Sales Director at a small boutique agency in Manchester, which was a wonderful experience.
Why did you choose to join Oscar?
At the start of 2020, I started to weigh up whether there was another role out there that would stretch me further, teach me new things and challenge me just that little bit more. I wanted a balance of an innovative company with high standards, yet one which could make an impact and grow.
As soon as I met with Oscar, I knew it was the right company for me. It was a no brainer for so many reasons - strength in leadership, positive culture, an agile award-winning business, just to name a few. I met Andy and Matt early on and this for me solidified my gut feel. I felt that they had a lot to teach me, and it felt really natural. I’m also excited to impart my knowledge with the team too who have made me feel so welcome from the get-go!
What will your role cover at Oscar?
My role at Oscar will be to grow the company’s proposition in the tech contract space, in both the UK and Europe. Not only will this involve getting strong foundations in place from a process perspective, it will mean diversifying our client base and building on Oscar’s already credible name in the market.
At the moment, the contract market is absolutely thriving. For a while during 2020, recruitment, in general, was put on pause and nobody was certain what would happen. Some contractors were moving over to perm roles, and vice versa - but now the storm has settled a bit, it’s obvious that the contract market is now better than it has been in a long time.
There’s been a huge impetus to change and adapt, which has seen a seismic shift in terms of hiring trends across the technology sector. Digital transformation has been at the core due to lockdown, seeing our clients and candidates adapting quickly, which means they are better placed to face this second lockdown.
Many tech specialists throughout 2020 have set up as contractors for the first time, joining an already established market, meaning there’s even more incredible talent on offer than there was before. Plus, with businesses uncertain about how things will go over the next year or so, they’re deciding to hire a lot more contractors in place of permanent members of staff.
This is great news for Oscar, as we already have a thriving perm team in place and an extremely high performing culture, and the Tech Contract team at Oscar is in growth mode.
If any businesses are looking for help with their contract recruitment, I encourage them to get in touch with us as we have some of the best contract recruiters I have ever worked with on my team.
Similarly, if there are any contractors looking for tech roles, I currently have clients who are looking for an elevation of skills across Data, DevOps, Cloud and Development, as technology continues to develop. We are also seeing clients opting for more a blended model; hiring contractors to plug gaps to enable them to pivot and reshape, whilst thinking about how to automate processes, increase efficiency, and reduce wastage - in essence, a lot of businesses are looking to re-write their tech roadmap.
Best of luck at Oscar, Caroline!
Thank you! I’m thrilled to be here. I really hope I can share my passion for tech and my innovative and agile ways of working with my new team.
