Oscar’s 2020 Charity Work
With the end of 2020 upon us, we’re looking forward to the next exciting year here at Oscar, as we relocate to our new Manchester HQ and continue to expand our team worldwide. Along with the excellent team, bespoke training programmes, and uncapped earning potential, there are a few other reasons why you might want to consider a career with Oscar. Corporate Social Responsibility CSR has always been one of the central parts of Oscar’s foundation as an employer of choice. In addition to our long list of benefits we offer our employees, we also put a huge emphasis on the significance of CSR within our company. Voluntary work not only encourages our staff to fundraise whenever possible, but it also demonstrates that we are committed to giving back to our community. Below, we have a breakdown of Oscar’s charity work and contributions throughout 2020. Forever Manchester As a company, we continued to donate £5 from our pay cheques each month to Forever Manchester. In addition to this, Sophie Binder and Antoni Davis- Phillips took on the national ‘Three Peak Challenge’ to raise money for Forever Manchester - and completed it, albeit there were some injuries along the way! Antoni and Sophie completed their incredible challenge in 23 hours and 50 minutes, with just ten minutes to spare, having run the last leg of the three peaks in the dark. They successfully completed their challenge, tackling the three highest peaks in the UK – Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowden - by walking over 37km with a total ascent of 3,064 metres. Well done, Sophie and Antoni! Along with Sophie and Antoni, Oscar’s CEO, Andy Morrell, has been involved in various fundraisers this year. Firstly, Oscar was awarded the Forever Manchester Employee Engagement Award for the second year running. The Employee Engagement Award is given in recognition of an employer that has encouraged and engaged with its staff positively to contribute to Forever Manchester and local communities; enhancing employee opportunities by raising funds, donating time and resources, and helping to raise awareness of Forever Manchester. Most recently, we also placed bids in the Forever Manchester charity art auction, which ran for a two week period, ending at the start of December. We are thrilled that Oscar won three pieces of art through the auction! All will be proudly displayed in our new office, and we are proud to have been able to donate a further £585 to Forever Manchester from Oscar. British Royal Legion and FareShare Along with his contributions to Forever Manchester, our CEO, Andy Morell, didn’t stop there! He also raised money by taking part in Movember, growing a moustache during the month of November, to raise money for the British Royal Legion. The group wanted to raise money due to the lack of poppy sales after the impact of the pandemic and collectively with other Bolton Wanderers fans, raised an incredible £1,700! Oscar also donated a considerable amount of money to FareShare, the UK’s national network of charitable food redistributors. Thank you for all your incredible charity work this year, Andy! Age UK After losing her grandmother this year to dementia, Jally Raekelboom made the thoughtful decision to raise money for Age UK to mark her birthday this year. She raised an incredible £473! Congratulations, Jally. Cancer Research UK Oscar’s team in London took on the difficult challenge of collectively running or walking the distance to and from our Manchester office, which would amount to over 673km. Together, the team decided to increase the target to 1,000km, by getting their steps in during lockdown this year. Well done to everyone involved for exceeding your £1,000 target! 33 Forever Over in the US, the Oscar team there also made a number of contributions to charities across America. The team donated $500 to 33 Forever to aid their work in supporting the mental health of those in need. Texas Children’s Hospital & Sky High For Kids The team in Texas participated in a Golf Scramble, hosted by Chemex, to support the Texas Children’s Hospital, whilst also looking to reorganise their own Golf Scramble in 2021, which was postponed due to the pandemic, to fundraise for Sky High For Kids. March of Dimes Tera Moore’s sorority, Zeta Phi Beta, also organised fundraising efforts, which generated $400 for March of Dimes. Also, the sorority have donated to sponsorships which provide gifts to 60 children who currently attend Travis Intermediate School. Their efforts will ensure the children receive gifts, slippers and toys, whilst 200 backpacks and school supplies have been donated directly to the school. GoFundMe Donations A cause close to Dan Selisker, one of Oscar’s Senior Consultants in Philadelphia, the team donated to one of Dan’s fraternity brother’s GoFundMe efforts, who also is one of the many candidates Dan has placed during his time at Oscar. Free Resume Review Services When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Leighann Neal began to offer free resume reviews and editing for those who lost their jobs as a result of the pandemic, dedicated to helping the community find work again. Endometriosis UK A long-standing ambassador to Endometriosis UK, Alice Smith continues to further her work with the charity by building connections and raising awareness of Endometriosis across the US into 2021.
