Full-Stack Engineer - Java & JavaScript - Cambridge

Are you both a versatile and technically strong individual that can thrive in a small team environment where you will be proactive and add value through your own contribution?

You will be responsible for regenerating and growing an existing system that is currently in use with established companies. This will involve building a new JavaScript/React based front end ingesting feeds in from a new Spring based backend using an existing MySQL database. It also includes taking operational control and support of the existing system. As well as the development work, there will be some system admin work. No day will be the same and you will need to be someone prepared to turn your hand to anything and learn new skills all the time.

About 5% of the job will be Ops related, shared with the development team, to keep the systems you build running! This involves;

  • Operating a capacity plan and optimising the back-end suite of servers/databases required to run the floor51 products
  • Highlight performance issues that cannot be resolved through optimisation of the existing resources, to the Directors and implement their requirements which may be to deploy new cloud servers and the migration of the service to these new servers
  • Develop scripts/applications that are needed for the ongoing development of the service such as scheduled tasks that are run overnight
  • You will have experience of database optimisation and will propose, and if agreed, implement performance improving suggestions to the Directors
  • Deploy new services to the test and live environments as required

The client is based in Cambridge and are a new and fast-growing software engineering company delivering high value, specialist solutions and products to the Telecom industry. As well as being experts in software solutions for highly secure SIM management. They also specialise in mobile device and system software solutions and have the capabilities to engineer specialised applications for the mobile industry.

They have their own products for economically and efficiently monitoring network performance and quality, particularly in the RAN. They also have tools to help mobile operators detect fraudulent use of their networks.



  • BS/MS degree in Computer Science, or related subject preferred but not essential
  • Proven working experience in software development


  • A levels and long-term experience of developing software applications
  • Industry certifications always useful


  • At least 5 years' experience in full stack web development, must be comfortable building, running, and owning a complete system including backend, frontend, database and supporting system infrastructure
  • Several years of experience in back-end system management
  • Ambitious, energetic, self-starter able to work unsupervised
  • Lateral thinker, comfortable solving difficult problems
  • Keeps up to date with technology and advancements in software engineering


  • Java / Java for server-side development
  • JavaScript for frontend development using ES2015

  • Comfortable designing and implementing MySQL schemas
  • Solid knowledge of the installation, configuration and maintenance of Linux and application software including Apache, MySQL, Tomcat

The package

  • £45k - £55k per year depending upon experience.
  • Core hours of 10-6 but allow flexible working
  • Some aspects of this job will require you to be on call and to work out of hours when the situation arises, typically upgrades to services will be deployed outside the working UK day
