Role - Lead / Principal Data Scientist

We are now searching for a Lead or Principal level Data Scientist for well-know Manchester based business and this role is exclusively available through Oscar.

The role

Essentially, this role oversees the Data Science and Engineering team and has a clear progression pathway to a "Head of Data Science" type role. Currently they are a team of 5 and what we are looking for is for someone to sit between the current "Head of" and the technical members of the team which comprise 1 Data Engineer and 4 Data Scientists. We have placed 80% of the members of that team so we know them well.

You will have line management responsibilities for the people within the team and be responsibly for things like setting objectives, performance feedback, training objectives. The team is very strong and has a range of experience levels within it.

The company

The Data Science team is a key pillar in the success of the business and as such they have a series of model which use on a daily basis to inform decision making.

They do have some major projects in play for development which I will run through with you before an interview but they cover areas such as:

  • Purchase and Sales prices of products
  • Customer behaviour
  • Improving UX

And a couple more!

The role is based in Manchester and offered on a hybrid basis with at least a couple of days a week in the office.

Responsibilities:

  • Communicating and translating technologically complex ideas into potential added business value
  • Communicating how data science & engineering can push the business forward
  • Overseeing the businesses direction of data science, engineering and ML and planning for future
  • Understanding stakeholders' problems and aiding in generating solutions business wide
  • Getting hands-on with problem solving as well as managing both long- and short-term projects
  • Developer of ML solutions within the business
  • Training, Developing, Coaching, Mentoring younger members of the team
  • Continually looking for opportunities to optimise ML models but also the tools and technologies within the data science group.
  • Promotion of best practise within in Data Science team
  • Act as an evangelist for Data, Analytics and Data Science within he company and with with stakeholders across the business to ensure we are extracting as much value as possible

Skills

  • Experienced Data Scientist with a track record of leading projects
  • Programming - knowledge in Python (plus libraries) and tools as well as a willingness to learn new ones
  • Cloud - Azure or GCP preferred
  • Management - we are looking for someone who has managed before, can be 1 person or more.
