Technical Architect - Java / AWS / Greenfield

*** Greenfield product / platform build and a role that's exclusive to Oscar as part of a campaign that we are running on behalf of our client.***

A new joint-venture organisation formed out of a partnership between a global software products firm and a high-profile advisory body, are putting together a new team to build develop a greenfield SaaS platform based around a Java 8 / Spring Boot micro-services architecture, on the AWS cloud.

This will bring together our clients expertise in building and scaling software products, with an already unique physical and partially digital product - effectively building a better product that is better for consumers and will create a SaaS platform that can be monetised!

The role, the tech stack and you

The joint-venture exercise will deliver a brand-spanking-new B2B and B2C platform, which will serve a 7m member organisation. This will be delivered by 6 Squads, creating back-end services, which will integrate with a lot of external API's and sit behind the customer-facing native mobile applications at the 'front end'.

The core technology stack will be AWS, Java 8, using Spring Boot for developing a loosely-coupled, micro-service architecture. You will be looking after the back-end aspects of the solution across the project and also responsible for the day-to-day technical direction and supervision of technical teams and building up their capabilities in the chosen technologies. As such, you won't live in an ivory tower; they will be just as comfortable in front of a white board as programming.

The right person loves learning new technology and is a Java guru, who understands AWS, it's ecosystem (EC2, DynamoDB, SQS, etc) and user interface technologies. Along with proven delivery experience you will understand the importance of a DevOps culture.

Essential skills / background

  • A Java guru
  • Amazon Web Services - AWS (a certified Associate/Professional Solution Architect would be a very nice-to-have)
  • Server-side API design and development for mobile devices
  • Java Spring Boot
  • Practical experience delivering micro-service-based architectures
  • Automated unit and automated functional testing
  • Proven experience of providing day-to-day hands-on technical leadership
  • Capable and willing to learn new technology
  • Worked within agile / scrum environments

Preferable skills

These are nice to haves, if you've got them fantastic, if not we'd still like to talk to you, as long as you have the essential skills.

  • DynamoDB
  • TDD or BDD
  • Python
  • Demonstrable experience of DevOps tooling, one or more of - AWS Opworks, Chef, Puppet, Ansible, Jenkins
  • Container technologies - Docker, Kubernetes

The Duties

  • Working as part of a larger team, leading, directing, troubleshooting the technical work of their squad
  • Providing day to day technical guidance
  • Review and supervision of the work done by their squad
  • Understands AWS and user interface technologies
  • Loves learning new technology and is a Java guru
  • Proven delivery experience
  • Strong understanding of the importance of a DevOps culture
  • Be able to demonstrate a strong track record of successful, high quality technical deliveries and have proven experience at scale
  • Working closely with the Scrum Master to deliver the user stories agreed as part of the sprint goal
  • Be just as comfortable in front of a white board as programming.
