The Future of Cyber Security

What can we expect in 2017?

With more and more of our sensitive information being stored online, companies are becoming increasingly concerned with Cyber Security.

In 2015 alone, over 10.2 million digital records were breached and compromised in the UK.

This is just one of the many alarming incidents that have contributed to Cyber Security becoming a top priority for UK business.

Despite all of the new threats however, new advances in Cyber Security trends have ensured that companies have the best possible chance of combating the threat.

Some of the biggest threats come from advances in Ransomware, Spear Phishing and The Internet of Things.

The impact of Ransomware has been steadily growing throughout 2016. Ransomware encrypts important files making data inaccessible until the company pays the ransom.

This kind of attack however can be easily stopped with more education and real-time security measures, which are expected to be increased throughout 2017.

The Internet of Things has become one of the main threats to Cyber Security in the past year. Due to the nature and design of the IoT, it is natural to expect attacks.

The IoT opens up vulnerabilities to the worldwide network and hackers are keen to take advantage of this.

In 2017 we can expect to see more encrypted sensitive material and restricted access to certain parts of the IoT as part of a way to combat these threats.

In general 2017 may bring about increased regulations and standardised security practices into protection strategies. Cyber insurance is also expected to peak in 2017 with more companies becoming concerned about the threat.

2017 can also expect to see an increase in automation to combat cyber threats. More companies are turning to machine learning for detection and response to any attacks.

Towards the end of 2016, Cyber Security placed much of it's emphasis on protection. There is a need for companies to become increasingly 'tech' savvy and as cyber threats increase, so does cyber protection.
