Working Towards My Tech Goals: Avoiding Comfort Zones

    Orla McGagh

With only three months of the year left, it’s time to push ourselves to complete the goals we set out for 2023. Granted, some of them may not be obtainable within the next few months, but we can start working towards them.

2023 has been an exciting year for the Tech industry with the proficient rise of artificial intelligence, it looks like there is a promising 2024 ahead. With that said, now is the best time to get prepped and ahead of the curve to flourish in the ever-evolving tech climate, even if this pushes us out of our comfort zone.

Getting out of your comfort zone:

In the tech industry, comfort zones are a no-go given it’s fast-paced nature. We can easily become complacent in our skillset, knowledge and network so it’s key to keep expanding on each of these.

Why Do We Stick to Our Comfort Zones?

First of all, most of us have a fear of rejection: We're human, and rejection stings. The fear of being turned down or ignored can make us hesitant to reach out to others. Also, many of us ‘techies’ have a rather introverted nature so the thought of reaching out to strangers to learn more, or expand our network seems daunting. We can’t forget, the dreaded two words ‘Imposter Syndrome’- this term is used so frequently within the tech industry due to feeling of competition amongst the immense talent, leaving us to feel like we don’t belong in certain settings.

    Embracing the Uncomfortable

Let's explore how you can step out of your comfort zone and make networking an integral part of your tech career:

    1. Start Small: If the idea of attending large conferences makes you break into a cold sweat, start small. Attend local meetups or online webinars related to your field.

    2. Prepare Elevator Pitches: Have a concise, compelling pitch ready to introduce yourself and your work. This will help you feel more confident when you meet new people.

    3. Listen Actively: Networking isn't just about talking about yourself. Listen actively to others, ask questions, and show genuine interest in their work. This fosters meaningful connections.

    4. Online Networking: Don't underestimate the power of online networking through platforms like LinkedIn or tech-focused forums. Engage in discussions, share your expertise, and connect with professionals from around the world.

    5. Join Communities:  Become a member of tech communities or associations related to your field. These provide excellent opportunities to network with peers who share your interests.

    6. Mentorship: Seek out mentors who can guide you in your career. Mentorship relationships often evolve into valuable networking connections.

The benefits of leaving your comfort zone are incontestable and can promote numerous benefits including; knowledge exchange, career opportunities, professional growth, and even act as a source of motivation. Networking is often the key to unlocking doors you never knew existed, it's about building relationships, sharing knowledge, and expanding your horizon. Fancy giving it a chance?
