Principal Engineer - micro-services / AWS / DevOps

If you live and breathe all things technical within the world of ecommerce and Java you're going to want to read on. You're an advocate of Continuous Delivery methods and insist on best practice approaches across the entire software engineering function. Keen to find out more just keep reading.

The Role

A retail business (more about them later) wants you! Why? They've realised that if they want to get to achieve winning edges within the ecommerce world they have to make some dramatic changes to their engineering functions. Enough about them for the moment the point is that they can't do it without you.

You're the expert that knows how to; get the best out of onshore and offshore teams during change; can quickly get to grips with the engineering function and shape its future direction with some incredible investment; ensure current products are being utilised to their max; get the teams working as best they can whilst enjoying what they are doing.

They have introduced Containerisation & Continuous Integration, however this position offers the incoming Principal Software Engineer the chance to help move them towards a 'DevOps culture' and introduce increased automation across the development, build, QA and deployment lifecycles.

Technical Platform

  • Java Development
  • Java 7 / 8, Core Spring, Spring MVC, Hibernate, SQL / Oracle databases
  • CI, CD, DevOps, Test automation, TDD, XP
  • Distributed technologies like ElasticSearch, Kafka, Cassandra, etc
  • JavaScript, HTML5 & CSS3

The Company

Why do you want to work for this company? They are gravitating towards eventually becoming a 'pure-play' retail brand as part of a major digital transformation programme. So far, this has seen them implement the Hybris e-commerce platform, Oracle Fusion middleware, plus beginning to replace legacy COTS fulfilment platforms that cover every aspect of the retail supply chain.

They have also introduced Agile / Scrum delivery methods, plus the Atlassian toolset to help improve communication & quality of delivery.

There are also Scrum teams developing micro-services products that run various services & integrate with the COTS / Enterprise platforms, with this role taking the lead of creating new teams that will be developing new products. Whilst the current prevailing technology stack is Java-based, there is scope to influence the future direction of technology used, therefore people that like to play around with Scala, Clojure, Node.js, Kafka, ElasticSearch, etc are ideal.
